Dark Age History.
are there any archaeologists in or around the axholme area im doing some research for a fiction book based on the pretext that the Saxons and angles were one of the first settlers on the east coast primarily around the axholme area and ive come across some information from around 380 – 450 ad which indicates that the land that was given to hengest and horsa of the Arthur and ambrosius legends weren’t given lands first in kent they were actually given lands around the axholme area and is there any archaeological evidence pointing to a roman fort or signal tower near to the highest point in axholme any information on the above would be fantastic many thanks rob brewitt
Details of the Sandtoft Roman Villa Excavation here : http://www.heritagegateway.org.uk/Gateway/Results_Single.aspx?uid=MLS901&resourceID=1034
There were certainly romans in the area, indeed there is very good evidence to suggest that Bycarrsdyke (The course of the River Idle from Idlestop to the River Trent) and Turnbridge Dyke (The course of the River Don from Thorne to the River Aire – but not the Dutch River) was built by the Romans to facilitate the legions move from Lincoln to York in AD71.
The remains of a Roman Villa at Sandtoft were excavated when the M180 was built.
