Windsor
Windsor is a small hamlet within Crowle, just off Windsor Lane.
It is the derivation for the names of Windsor Road, Windsor Crescent and Windsor Lane itself.
Before the construction of the houses on Windsor Road it was quite a distinct settlement from Crowle itself.
The small hamlet of Windsor is within the plot of land numbered 219 in the 1822 Enclosures Act Award Plan . This plot was awarded to Johnathan Sayles. In the Manorial Plan of 1738 the area is just part of Godnow Common.
Windsor is depicted on the plans for a couple of railways that were not built; The Goole, Keadby and Haxey Junction Railway, 1865 and the Axholme & Marshland Railway 1866.

100 on the plan is not strictly in Windsor but was accessed from Windsor Road, then known as Commonside. This property was known as Peat Moss Villa and was a large terrace of simple houses – more information can be found here on the Crowle Community Forum

Hello my mum lives in Windsor Lane originally there was a farm on the land but the original deeds which were lost by the mortgage company dates the
Land back to a manor of some kind. Do you know anymore about this? I would love to get copies of,the deeds for 10 Wimdosr Lane tracing it back to whne Windsor was a hamlet do you know how I would go about this?

Hi Linda,
Most properties in Crowle were copyhold from the Manor of Crowle. When ownership of a property changed hand this would have been through the manorial court. The term copyhold is used because someone’s title to a property was entered in the court rolls and the occupier would be given a copy of this entry to prove ownership.

Thank you for such an informative site. We have recently moved into the village and would love your help in tracing the history of our house, Clifton House, on Windsor Road.
There is a plaque dating it to 1902 but the deeds seem to take it back to the early 1800s.
John Chester who was landlord of at least two public houses in the area either side of 1900 bought it with his wife Charlotte in 1901.
Would you have any information on him or the house and in particular why it was named Clifton House.

Thank you for your kind comments. I like pulling together house histories – it can be an interesting challenge. It would be useful to see the deed that you have as they will provide a good start to pulling together the history. I’m guessing that if the deeds date back to the early 1800’s then it is likely that the land your house is built on was enclosed by the Crowle enclosure act which was enacted in 1823. Windsor road tends to be referred to on 19th-century maps as Common Side (which of curse today we think of as being between Cross Street and Newbigg).
I am intending to have a house history theme for our April Heritage Society meeting so perhaps we could use your house as one example.

In 1881 – John Chester was Licensee of the Mason’s Arms – https://crowle.org/?p=1915 – he was still there in the 1891 Census.
I know a Chester who still lives in Crowle – I wonder if he is related – I’ll ask.
