Hello from the island of Cyprus, your website is a great tribute to times gone by, with one photo puzzling me so I hope you may be able to help. In the distance of the picture of Keadby Junction a Q5? locomotive is seen inside some form of housing. It could be a basic engine shed, but I am wondering if the engine was supplying steam for perhaps the original swing bridge? Can you say please, how that bridge was powered? The high-level water tank could have been a supply for a hydraulic bridge mechanism, but still the locomotive’s presence is a mystery. I would be grateful for any comment, thank you.
Hi Roger,
Apologies for the delay in replying. You’re right it does look as though the tank frame is enclosing the loco. As far as I recall from what I have read the original swing bridge was manually powered. The 1889 plan of teh original bridge can be seen here – https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5608/15304295548_c87764656a_b.jpg. You can see that the loco is ‘parked’ on the short siding behind the bridge keepers hut. The tank is not shown. I’ll see if I can find out anything further.

I am writing on behalf of the Thames Sailing Barge Trust, a registered charity. We are carrying out research on the voyages that one of our Thames sailing barges, Pudge undertook. She went to Keadby many times. I see you have a phot of the Jetty Keadby which has sailing barges in it.
As part of the educational work we are doing for the HLF, we wondered if we could get a high resolution copy of this image.
If this is possible could you let me know if there is any cost involved. We have no plans to make money from the picture its solely educational.
Thank you. I lok forward to hearing from you.
