{"id":59,"date":"1970-01-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"1970-01-01T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/crowle.biz\/?p=59"},"modified":"2015-03-10T20:20:47","modified_gmt":"2015-03-10T20:20:47","slug":"st-oswald-parish-church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crowle.org\/?p=59","title":{"rendered":"St Oswald Parish Church"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3929\/15390795016_7eafbc7291_o.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" class \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">St Oswald&#8217;s Church, Crowle<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There was a church in Crowle at the time of the Domesday survey in 1066.<\/p>\n<p>It is likely that this structure was was a simple wooden structure with a rush roof.<\/p>\n<p>Geoffrey de Wirce, who was the first Norman Lord of the Isle of Axholme gave a quantity of land in Crowle to the Abbey of Saint Germains at Selby.<\/p>\n<p>The original stone church was built around 1100AD. This comprised a one storey nave with a door at the west end and a small chancel at the east end.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently the building was enlarged by the addition of a bell tower and the construction of a clerestory and north aisle. A new entrance was made in the south wall and set within a Norman archway.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2942\/15227448798_f679ee143f_o.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"312\" class \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Interior view of church looking from Chancel to Nave.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Throughout the Middle Ages the church had few alterations, although the windows were remodelled in the fifteenth century.<\/p>\n<p>In 1792 the north aisle was pulled down and rebuilt with a gallery extending to the west end.<\/p>\n<p>The chancel was rebuilt in 1856 and in1884 a complete restoration of the church took place leaving the church much as it looks today.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There was a church in Crowle at the time of the Domesday survey in 1066.
