The shop is like an Alladin&#8217;s cavern of useful items that are hard to find elsewhere and if they haven&#8217;t got what you are looking for they&#8217;ll do their best to get it for you. In this day of internet shopping, it is a breath of fresh air.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the <g class=\"gr_ gr_3 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"3\" data-gr-id=\"3\">Chafor<\/g> family have only been running the shop for a little over fifty years the shop has been an ironmonger&#8217;s shop for more than 150years! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><g class=\"gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"5\" data-gr-id=\"5\">Chafor&#8217;s<\/g> shop site on the Crowle manorial plan of 1738<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"541\" height=\"393\" src=\"https:\/\/crowle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1738-Plan-Chafors-Shop.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4714\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crowle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1738-Plan-Chafors-Shop.png 541w, https:\/\/crowle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1738-Plan-Chafors-Shop-300x218.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 541px) 100vw, 541px\" \/><figcaption>Detail from the 1738 Manorial plan showing Chafor&#8217;s Shop site.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nThe Terrier lists 172 as being owned by Edmund Maw junior and is described as a messuage house homestead and garden with an area of 32perches. The property was held as copyhold.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1911 Land Tax Survey<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey took place as a result of the 1909-1910 Finance Act which provided for the levy and collection of duty on land in the United Kingdom based on any increased value of the land as a result of public money spent on communal infrastructure \u2013 a so-called \u2018increment value duty\u2019. These records give useful details on the owners and occupiers of property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1911 Land Tax Survey<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"731\" height=\"439\" src=\"https:\/\/crowle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1911-Chafors-Shop.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4715\" srcset=\"https:\/\/crowle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1911-Chafors-Shop.png 731w, https:\/\/crowle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/1911-Chafors-Shop-300x180.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 731px) 100vw, 731px\" \/><figcaption>1911 Land Tax Survey Map &#8211; The site of Chafor&#8217;s shop is numbered 72<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The report from the 1911 Tax Return shows that the Shop was owned by Miss Gertrude Pheasant (confirming that George Pheasant did live in this particular property) and the occupier is stated as \u2018Batty Jno E now Donald\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The property is shown as being sold in 1909 for a\nconsideration of \u00a3800 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rent is given as \u00a350 per annum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shop is described as;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ironmonger&#8217;s shop, warehouse, workshop &amp; good <g class=\"gr_ gr_12 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"12\" data-gr-id=\"12\">house&nbsp; in<\/g> Crowle. Excellent corner site. <g class=\"gr_ gr_9 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"9\" data-gr-id=\"9\">Roof<\/g> of house &amp; shop in bad order workshop needs attention. Good garden at back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Area approximately 26 perches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Property further described;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Brick &amp; tile. Front shop, Back shop, 2 rooms,\nkitchen warehouse and showroom over. 3 bedrooms and box room.<\/li><li>Brick &amp; slate. Stores, wash house. Workshop\nover.<\/li><li>Brick &amp; slate. Coals &amp; closet<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using trade directories and census returns we can identify who was occupying  the shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>George\nPheasant &#8211; To 1900<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-flickr wp-block-embed is-type-photo is-provider-flickr\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/p\/oiTpEP\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/2929\/14642259663_984f50324a_b.jpg\" alt=\"georgepheasantwatchcase\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" \/><\/a>\n<\/div><figcaption>A watch made by George Pheasant in Crowle.<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1841 census he is shown as living near Snaith at\nHirst Courtney and his profession is given as Gun Smiths Apprentice.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/interactive\/8978\/WRYHO107_1279_1280-0531\/12191498\">https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/interactive\/8978\/WRYHO107_1279_1280-0531\/12191498<\/a>\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the 1851 census he is living with his wife Sarah, who was born in Crowle, and his profession is gunmaker \u2013 difficult to say for definite whether he is already living in the building that was to become Chafor\u2019s.<br> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/interactive\/8860\/YRKHO107_2349_2349-0915\/14318820\">https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/interactive\/8860\/YRKHO107_2349_2349-0915\/14318820<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1861 <g class=\"gr_ gr_10 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation only-ins replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"10\" data-gr-id=\"10\">census<\/g> he is described as an Ironmonger and is living with his wife and three children Alfred, Charles &amp; Annie. The position in the census is in close proximity to The George &amp; Dragon (landlord George Pidd) so I feel it is likely this would be in the shop that was to become <g class=\"gr_ gr_28 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"28\" data-gr-id=\"28\">Chafor\u2019s<\/g>. Possibly his change in his reported profession was because he had taken over an ironmonger\u2019s shop \u2013 but this is just conjecture.<br> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/interactive\/8767\/WRYRG9_3526_3528-0042\/11722528\">https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/interactive\/8767\/WRYRG9_3526_3528-0042\/11722528<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1871 census he is described as an Ironmonger with 6\nmen. He is living with his wife and three children Charles, Annie and Emily.\nAgain because of the proximity to the George &amp; Dragon I am fairly confident\nthat he is living in the property that was to become Chafer\u2019s.<br>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/interactive\/7619\/WRYRG10_4728_4730-0038\/9803905\">https:\/\/www.ancestry.co.uk\/interactive\/7619\/WRYRG10_4728_4730-0038\/9803905<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1881 census he is described as an Ironmonger and is\nliving with his wife, and two daughters. The road is Market Street, which\nappears to have been the name given to the bit of the high street between the\nMarket Place and Church Street. In 1861 he is described as a Tinplate worker, in 1871 he is described as a Tinplate worker and gas fitter, in 1881 after moving to the Isle of Man he is described as a Master Ironmonger. He had 6 children with his first wife, Ruth, before being widowed. He married his second wife Mary who came from the Isle of Man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 1901 Census shows John Edward Batty living in Crowle with\nhis wife Mary, and he described as an Ironmonger. In 1901\nhe was living in Worksop and is described as an Ironmonger\u2019s Assistant. He\nmarried his wife in 1908 in Worksop.
