{"id":1899,"date":"2013-01-20T21:00:56","date_gmt":"2013-01-20T21:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/crowle.org\/?p=1899"},"modified":"2014-09-23T19:08:58","modified_gmt":"2014-09-23T19:08:58","slug":"beer-house-licenses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crowle.org\/?p=1899","title":{"rendered":"Beer House Licenses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Ale Houses Act of 1551<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prior to 1828 Pubs were licensed under the Ale Houses Act of 1551; An Act for Keepers of Ale-houses to be bound by Recognisances.<br \/>\nIt was passed to control the &#8220;abuses and disorders as are had and used in common ale-houses&#8221;, and laid the foundation of modern licensing law.<br \/>\nNo-one was to be permitted to keep an ale-house without being so licensed by the Justices at Quarter Sessions, and the Justices were to take bond and surety of the keepers of common ale-houses and tippling-houses. This surety was to prevent the playing of unlawful games as well as for the maintenance of public order.<br \/>\nIt was repealed by section 35 of the Alehouse Act 1828.<\/p>\n<p>For Crowle this meant that Ale-house keepers had to obtain a license from the Lindsey Quarter Sessions.<\/p>\n<p>The wording of the license;<br \/>\nLincolnshire Lindsey<br \/>\n[John Smith of Crowle] in the said parts acknowledges to owe our sovereign Lord the King the sum of [Ten Pounds]<br \/>\n[Enoch Margrave] in the said parts acknowledges to owe our sovereign Lord the King the sum of [Ten Pounds]<\/p>\n<p>To be levied on their several Goods and Chattels, Lands and Tenements by Way of Recognizance to His Majesty&#8217;s Use . Upon Condition that whereas [John Smith] is this day licensed to keep a common Ale-house or Victualling-House in the Parish of [Crowle] in the said parts for the Term of one Year only, from the twenty-ninth Day of September, Instant.
