The 1738 Manorial Plan and survey includes a list of all the closes and who owned them. Many of the closes have interesting names.<\/p>\n

Although the formal enclosure of the\u00a0commons and open fields did not take\u00a0place until the early 19th century there\u00a0were a large number on enclosed fields.<\/div>\n

The enclosure plan refers to these as the\u00a0Ancient Enclosures.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The 1738 manorial plan and survey\u00a0shows these enclosures. Many of the\u00a0enclosure outlines still exist in modern\u00a0field boundaries.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Almost all of the individual enclosures\u00a0were named in the 1738 survey. The\u00a0following are some of the names given to\u00a0the main groups of closes.<\/div>\n

Close \u2013\u00a0An enclosed field.<\/div>\n
Carr –\u00a0marshy woodland or scrubland\u00a0[from Old Norse]<\/div>\n
Croft –\u00a0A small enclosed field or pasture\u00a0near a house.<\/div>\n
Demesne –\u00a0land which was for the\u00a0personal use of the lord of the manor.<\/div>\n
Garth –\u00a0A yard, garden, or paddock.\u00a0[Middle English,\u00a0enclosed yard\u00a0, from Old\u00a0Norse\u00a0grader\u00a0;]<\/div>\n
Inge –\u00a0meadow(s), especially water\u00a0meadow near a river<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
